Beyond Rainbows: Radiohead Portrait. Colored Pencil, Digital. 2011.

About two years ago, on a cold Minneapolis night, my friend Brandon asks me, “Hey Carl, do you like Radiohead?”
“What? No! What the the hell is a Radiohead? Is that like The Facebook?”
So Brandon goes over to his computer and starts playing In Rainbows, track seven.
“Wow,” I say. “This woman has a beautiful voice.”
“Uh, actually it’s Thom Yorke’s voice. He’s the lead singer and he’s a guy.”
“Oh.” I say. “Well he has a very beautiful voice. And yes: I guess I do like The Radiohead.”
Anyway, Radiohead released a new album today. As a strange coincidence, I finished this portrait of Radiohead earlier this week.

“Howl, howl, howl, howl! O! you are men of stones:
Had I your tongue and eyes, I’d use them so
That heaven’s vaults should crack. She’s gone for ever!”
- William Shakespeare, King Lear, Act V, Scene 3

Oh daddy dear you know you’re still number one
But girls they want to have fun
-Cyndi Lauper

Lutefisk Sushi was unleashed on the denizen of Minneapolis this past weekend to great fanfare (check out Danno’s Blog) and my contribution, Male-Man and the Champions of Pretty Much Everything, was amongst a rag-tag fleet of more than 50 minicomics included in the bento box. All conscientious citizens and patrons of the ‘ah-ts’ should head down to Altered Esthetics and purchase a bento, but for those of you not in Minnesota, here are the first eight pages of my mini online for free. (More in the next post!)

Lutefisk Sushi (The Twin Cities’ hottest indie comics event) returns like a comet for its forth go-around on August 6th at the Altered Esthetics gallery in Minneapolis. This year’s featured artist is Mr. Danno ‘Dank’ Klonowski (Manly Tales of Cowardice) and featured above is his design for the bento box. For the uninitiated, Lutefisk Sushi is a semi-annual event where Minnesotan members of the International Cartoonist Conspiracy produce an edition of silkscreened boxes and them fill them with their individual minicomics. As a lifetime member of the ICC and a former Minnesotan, I’ve been generously allowed a minicomic in the Lutefisk Sushi Vol. D bento. Interested parties can pick up a copy of the bento (I think it’s like, $20-25?) at the gallery. The box is a limited edition containing over 50 different minicomics! I’ll be posting my mini online sometime after the opening for those of you not in Minnesota.
